Community Radio Pioneer in Italy (Radio Julia 1970s) author and expert concerning the relations between media and social movements.
Statement, Franco Berardi:
The very concept of free media has changed a lot during the past thirty years. In the '70's free media was the cultural and political force aimed to the critique and the destruction of the state-owned monopoly of information, and aimed to the political counterinformation and cultural empowerment of society. Nowadays free media is something much more complex. When I think of free media today I think mediactivism, deconstruction and subvertising of the dominant flow of information. But I also think of the urgent need of the creation of spaces of silence, autonomy from the oppressive white noise of the media-environment. Free media today means a campaign aginst the media pervasiveness, the rediscovery of the contact between non mediated bodies.
