Christian Jungwirth

As one of the pioneers in Austrian private radio Christian Jungwirth made a name for himself as the initiator and founder of several independent radio stations in Austria as early as the 1990s, including Orange 94.0, “das Freie Radio” in Vienna. From 1998 –2001 he also served as General Manager of the nation-wide Association of Free Radios Austria. Since 2001 he has continued his media-policy work with this association in the position of a board member. In January 2005 Christian Jungwirth accepted the position of Managing Director of the newly founded Vienna Community Television Station Okto.

Statement:

“With its unique media concentration Austria needs a vital scene of non-commercial community radio and television stations. These stations need an appropriate list of general conditions regarding media policies and financial resources. Most of the Austrian provincial governments and also the Austrian federal government can use the Viennese media policies as an example. The fact that all the political parties in Vienna – with the exception of the ultra-right FPÖ – chose to promote one of the largest Free Radio Stations in the German-speaking region (Orange 94.0) and one of the largest Community TV Stations in Europe (Okto) can be seen as an example of the best form of practice.”
