In this edition of Potluck Ill be wrapping up my report on the South By SouthWest music festival that attended for Radio FRO in March. Featuring music from Peaches, Jake Bugg, Loretta Lynn, Dion and the Estrons as well as short tribute to Prince.
In March I attended the South by Southwest (SXSW) Music Festival for Radio FRO. Celebrating its 30th anniversary, SXSW is the largest Pop/Rock music showcase festival in the world. The festival takes place over the course of 5 days during the March spring break in Austin, Texas. I had a choice of some 2,000 plus bands, representing over 50 countries
There I got to see almost 40 concerts. Most of these in small venues and again Austin has earned its title as the live music capital of the world. In this show youll be hearing tracks from the 15 bands that impressed me the most.
The International Womens Day is in March - so for this edition of Potluck I put together a retro - Women Only playlist featuring music from Carole King. This show is retro in two ways: much of the music was originally recorded in the 60s and Ill be playing Kings 1971 seminal album Tapestry straight through.
Marco Wanda has gotten flak for using the word baby in the title track of Wandas new album Bussi Baby. Some find this sexist. So I put together a playlist of iconic (some seminal) pop songs with the word baby in them. Featuring classic tunes from Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Tracy Chapman and many others.
This edition of Potluck focuses on my personal highlights of this years Edinburgh Festival that I attended last month. The show includes: music from FFS, Sparks & Franz Ferdinand as well as new Scottish bands and singer-songwriters, a slam poem, some pretty strange stuff and comments on plays and such.
This show is dedicated Tom Sukitsch, a friend who has recently passed away. I met Tom on my way to the 2010 SXSW Music festival. Tom a SX Veteran and walking pop-music encyclopedia introduced me to the Broken Biscuits Records gang. The Broken Biscuits are motley crew of international music freaks who meet up every year at SXSW. I asked the Broken Biscuits to make suggestions for this special show, The playlist reflects Toms eclectic tastes.
This edition of Potluck starts out with more new releases from 2015 featuring artists such as: Alabama Shakes, Modest Mouse, The Tallest Man on Earth, FFS, Calexico and Father John Misty. Following that will be a mixed bag of summer sounds and Ill be closing the show with a classic track from Patti Smith.
On this edition of Potluck Ill be presenting a selection of new releases from the first half of this year. Featuring FFS, Blur, Florence + The Machine, Leon Bridges, Alabama Shakes, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy and many more.
March 8th was Internatioal Woman's Day so this edition of Potluck will feature new music from Sleater-Kinney and Courtney Barnett as well as a tribute to the late Leslie Gore (60's pop star and feminist and LGBT activist).
